MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Education is a stepping-stone to a child’s future and it will be my job as a teacher and mentor to make sure that their education is the best it can be. It will be my responsibility to understand and know the material I am teaching and how best to relay the information to my students. It will need to be presented in a way to keep the students interest, and to be sure the students know and comprehend what they are learning. I want to make math more than just busy work and make it a helpful step into my students’ future.
Amongst the students in my future classrooms, I know they will be of diverse cultures and will relate best to different learning styles. Each student can show me new ways to express math in more relatable ways as well as show me how individuals learn best such as via group work, individual assignments, or whole class discussions. I know every class and every year is filled with different types of students and I have to be creative in so many unique ways just to make sure I am getting through to each and every one of them. This includes being knowledgeable about technology. This generation of students is surrounded with technology and if there are tools that aid the learning and engagement in students such as Geometer’s Sketch Pad, than it will be my responsibility to incorporate them into my classroom.
School is more than just a place to learn History, English and Mathematics; it is a place for students and teachers to guide and learn collaboratively. In the classroom, I believe learning should be equal between student and teacher. I believe a classroom where students communicate with their classmates is one of the best learning environments. I will put forth my best effort into preparing engaging and differentiated lessons all while having the expectations for my students to bounce ideas, ask and answer questions, and justify amongst each other.
Learning from my students outside of the classroom and vise versa will be one of my main priorities when it comes to teaching. The profession of teaching consists of more than teaching from set standards, it entails guiding students and being there for them when they need it the most. I feel that part of the job description for a teacher is that you have to care for your students and if you don’t, what would be the point? I look forward to building close relationships with my students and I want my students to be able to feel comfortable enough to come to me with any life or school problems they seek help for. Providing a comfortable environment creates an open door to learn and guide students to the best of their ability. I know that anyone can accomplish something they put their mind to. No one is going to want to learn if the environment around them is cold and unwelcoming.
Life is always going to have its ups and downs, good times and bad, and be a lot of fun, which is what I expect my classroom to be like. My goal as a teacher is to have my students excited to walk through my door. I will give my students my full attention at all times and give them the best I can and more. If I, as a teacher, don’t provide my students the best education and environment for building a life and future, than I am not sticking to what I believe. Teaching is a lifestyle and a choice, not a requirement, and this is the best choice I have ever made.
